  • FAQ

Q: "Do long hair and short hair cats need to be groomed?" " Don't they groom themselves?"

A: Let's first take a look at the hair of a cat's coat.  The hair of a cat is like human hair, constantly growing, dying, and renewing itself.  The hair follicles have another purpose which is essential to feline health.  They secrete an oily substance, which spreads along the hair, giving the cat its' natural shine.  In long-haired cats the shedding process is continous all year round, and in shorthairs it is most noticeable in spring when the thick winter coat is shed.

Now, let's take a look on cat's skin as well.  Cats have two layers of skin.  The hairs of the coat are rooted in the inner layer while the outer layer is mainly protective.  The cells which make up the outer layer are constantly dying and being renewed, and the dead cells (also known as dandruff) will drop through the coat or attach to the oily hair.

The dead hair, the oily skin and the dandruff will form the hair tangles and over time will turn into mats.  Mats will cause great discomfort, stress and pain to the cat.  With frequent combing and regular professional grooming,  the cat can live a healthy and happy life.
